WebPorphyrins occur in plant and animal tissues, including those of man. Coproporphyrin1was first found in the feces of a now famous case of congenital porphyria, Petry, by Hans Fischer2in 1915. Because the porphyrin was present almost entirely in feces, Fischer unfortunately called the substance "coproporphyrin." WebFecal porphyrin excretion usually is not elevated in acute intermittent porphyria (AIP), but massive increases of fecal coproporphyrin are seen in hereditary coproporphyria (HCP). Fecal protoporphyrin and coproporphyrin excretion is increased in variegate porphyria (VP). This fecal porphyrins assay is not a screening test.
